Where's the bait in Tampa Bay?
« on: December 17, 2017, 05:31:10 PM »
Has anyone had any luck finding decent size Greenbacks in Tampa Bay recently? I've searched Hula Bay, Snell Isle and Weedon Island. Over the last three weekends the bait has been noticeably harder to find. I live in the Weedon Island area and don't want to motor all the way to the Skyway at daybreak to find bait, to come all the way back to Weedon to fish.

Thanks starsandstripes. I'm looking for bait further north in the bay. North of the Skyway.

You're in luck with your location.  I've been netting BIG white baits on the tower at the north end of weedon island.  Not the shallow water tower (or the 1st tower just south of gandy bridge), but the tower about even with the power plant channel, 20 ft of water.  Depending on boat traffic, which has been minimal, I'll tie up on the tide-side of tower and start throwing out a chum slick.  They'll come up to the surface, along with pinfish, then I throw my net over top.  Usually fill my well in 2 throws.  This is the only spot I've been marking bait consistently over the past two weeks.  The flats behind hula and flats at weedon has been poor, and if they're there it's been very small baits that gill in my 3/8" mesh.  Good luck.

Thank you very much ClassicAQ. I really appreciate the detailed instructions. I'll try that spot this week and let you know what I find. Merry Christmas.

Great advise ClassicAQ, thank you. I went by there this morning around 7:45 and found greenbacks, pin fish and thread fins. All good size.

Good to hear, you're welcome.  They've been stacked on that tower for weeks, BIG baits too.  I don't even first look on the flats anymore, due to the small size, which end up gilled in my 3/8" mesh.  Not worth the trouble as long as the tower continues to hold the big baits.
